| PRESS RELEASE- Hello Baltimore! |
Corporate Office 540 Deering Avenue Portland, ME 04103 Tel:(207)772-7272 Fax:(207)772-0001 www.ArtistCraftsman.com Larry@artistcraftsman.com PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 9th, 2008 Hello Baltimore Larry Adlerstein, President of Artist and Craftsman Supply has announced today that his company will be opening their 14th nation-wide retail store in August of 2008, in Baltimore, Maryland. It will be located at 135 North Avenue West, right next to the Maryland Institute College of Art’s graduate building. "We have just signed a lease in Baltimore. In what was one of the most exciting store searches we have ever taken part in. We ended up with a location that is almost too good to be true, almost we hope." "Baltimore is a complicated city. Beautiful old architecture from the prosperous Mid-Atlantic days is now decaying or being renovated. The art school, the Maryland Institute College of Art on North Avenue borders an area that reminds me of East Liberty, Pittsburgh, or upper King Street in Charleston, S.C. years ago when we opened there. North Avenue too, will rise. We’ve got the best location for an art supply in the city." Artist and Craftsman Supply was established by Larry Adlerstein in 1985. The first location in Portland, Maine has now grown to 14 retail stores nationwide. From Charleston, South Carolina, to Seattle, Washington. They also have a full featured retail online presence at www.ArtistCraftsman.com. There you can find a full selection of art supplies and more information about their retail locations. We offer a complete selection of artist and craft supplies. We feature genuine value in acrylic paints, oil paints, brushes, sculpture materials, drafting supplies, gouache, watercolors, pastels, and pencils. In addition to the usual stretched canvas and boards, we supply wood painting panels and rigid painter’s foam board. Our paper inventory lists such names as Arches, BFK & Canson, but we also buy containers from Italy’s Fabriano mill and gather overstocks and closeouts from all over the world. ### |

| Larry's Corner- End of May 2008 |
Larry's Corner May 2008- Steve and John, Artist + Craftsman manager and webmaster respectively, have invited me to write in this nook from time to time. What fun. I like writing letters, and there is so much to write about in these "interesting times". I ‘m one of the few people who thinks $4.00 gas is good. It’s apparently the only way to get our wasteful country to take conservation seriously.... |

| Mommy, where are art supplies really made? |
That is a question often heard at Artist and Craftsman. So to respond to the inquisitive children and grown ups, we asked a number of top officials in our industry, Mommy, where are art supplies really made? Here are their responses. Justin Wraight- General Manager of ColArt Americas: Liquitex- All professional grade acrylics are manufactured in the U.K. Mediums are made in Lamont, France in the French factory, specializing in different acrylics, resins, and mediums. Student Grade Acrylics are made in the Far East in China, just two hours south of Beijing. Watercolors and Oils- professional grades are made in London, U.K. Student grade are made in France, due to big batches and high volume of acrylics and resins. Our other student ranges, Winton and Cotman, are also manufactured in the U.K. Winsor and Newton does not manufacture anything from the Far East it all comes from either the U.K. or France. We also manufacture brushes in Lowestoft, England. All of our sable brushes are made there. Our hog brushes are manufactured in China, and all of our handles are made in Italy. We do have some student to beginner brushes under the Winsor Newton name that are manufactured in the Far East. All of the top end Winsor and Newton Brushes are manufactured in Lowestoft. Our student ranges of LeFranc and Bourgeois- French brand are made in France, while our professional LeFranc and Bourgeois are made in our U.K. factory. Reeves was established in the U.K. 250 years ago. When Winsor Newton and Reeves merged, Winsor Newton became the dominant player. We have a 90% joint venture in China. Reeves is primarily manufactured in China. We recently established two canvas plants. One is in China, while the other is in India which manufactures for the US market only. Walt Glazer- CEO of Speedball: Speedball makes a lot of print making inks and tools. They are primarily made in Statesville, North Carolina. All the inks are mixed there and we buy various pigments and non-toxic chemicals. Inks, paints, and all fluids, are 100% mixed and formulated at the Speedball plant. 98% of all fluid products we sell have pigments and chemicals sourced from U.S. vendors. Calligraphy nibs are 100% produced in our plant. Mixing, filling, and packaging are all done in the United States as well. Howard Kaufman- CEO of Princeton: As far as brushes are concerned, everything that is in the Princeton line is imported. Nothing is made in the US. We went from American made to Japanese then Korean, and now, as the Chinese became more aware and were taught by the Koreans and Japanese how to make quality brushes; everything is now made in either China or in India. India is cheaper for some products and China is cheaper for things like Natural Bristle. Those two countries dominate. I would expect that the ball will continue to roll into the countries that have the lower wage rate and I wouldnít be surprised if over the next five years we see Vietnam and Cambodia making brushes, as they are now manufacturing some other art materials. Bob Toth- V.P. Marketing for Canson: The majority of our papers are manufactured in France. Canson invented tracing and colored papers. Canson Mi- Tientes, one of our most popular papers is made in Annonay, France. We do some sourcing in the U.S.; these papers are mainly beginner sketch and drawing papers and are made to our specifications. All Arches papers including BFK Rives are made at the Arches Mill in Arches, France. All of our Talens Paints are made in Holland. We don't have any paint products made anywhere else other then Holland, even our student grade paints are made there. Of course, the pigments come from all over the world. Debra MacDonald - Marketing and Sales Manager for Chroma: The high grade pigments and high grade emulsions are from U.S and Australia. Chroma manufacturing facilities are located in Lititz, Pennsylvania, and Sydney, Australia. Jo-Sonja and A>2 are both made in Australia and the United States. Interactive is manufactured in Australia only, however, the U.S. has the capability of manufacturing any water-based products. All of our education products, which include Chromacryl, Chromacryl Essentials, and Aurora, are made, mixed, and packaged in the United States. Zoila Woodard- President Borden & Riley Borden & Riley has been a paper supplier to the Art Supply industry for almost 100 years. Started in New York in 1910 it has been in the Woodward family for 40 years. Recognized for its high quality products , fair prices and excellent service, Borden and Riley is proud that all of our products are manufactured in our own facility in Queens, New York. The majority of the paper we use comes from North American Paper Mills, although some paper originates from overseas. Most papers are made from either wood pulp or cotton rags or a blend of the two materials. More and more papers are being manufactured from recycled materials as everyone becomes acutely aware of the need to protect the fragile environment of the planet we live on. Borden & Riley attempts to find a blend between satisfying the needs of our sophisticated customers and protecting the environment. Pierre Guidetti- Owner of Savior Faire: Cretacolor is from Austria. The wood used in their pencils is cedar wood, which comes from California. Sennelier paints, pastels, and all the colors are made in France. Brushes are also made in France, where the modern brushes were invented. The school brushes from Raphael are made in the Mauritius Islands, near Madagascar. We have a factory there which is owned, managed, and educated by the French team. 100% of Fabriano's Paper is manufactured in Italy. Lascaux Acrylic Paints are manufactured in Switzerland. Lama Li Paper is made in Nepal. Agawami Paper is made in Japan. 100% of Charbonnel Etching Inks are made in France. Frank Stapleton- President of MacPhersons: Our factory, where our canvas is made, moved from China to Vietnam because of issues created by our government. The rest of the products in our Art Alternatives brand come from China, Indonesia, Europe, and India. Our specific proprietary brands that we import come mostly from Europe. From England we import Letraset and Tria Markers. From Germany we source pencil sharpeners and Montana Cans, a great line of spray paint. Their headquarters is in Heidelberg, Germany. We also offer Mabef Easels from Italy. We distribute under the RGM brand excellent quality painting knives from Italy as well, near Venice. LeFranc and Bourgeois are made in France and we go back to Germany for the wonderful sketching, drawing, and writing materials made by Stabillo. Tim Hopper- President of Holbein: We are a Japanese color manufacturer principally and all of our 16 color lines are manufactured in Japan. We do import a variety of other items though. We import two different brush lines, one from Northern Japan, and the other from the U.K. We also bring in sundries, accessories, metal ware, ceramic ware, easels, and etching presses, all of which are made in Japan. Holbein for 116 years has been manufactured in Japan. |

| Featured Store- Brooklyn |
Featured Store: Brooklyn – Abby Perez, Manager Atmosphere Like all neighborhoods in New York, Williamsburg has a flavor and vibe all its own. With its artsy mix of culture and industrialism, it has become the perfect haven for area artists and their studios. It is here that you will find Brooklyn's Art Store, Artist & Craftsman Supply, situated on Metropolitan Avenue on the border of Williamsburg and Bushwick. There is a residential component to the neighborhood, so many up and coming artists are setting up working space. One such artist was Abby Perez, who a year ago started exploring the area and to her surprise discovered there was this major fine art supply store just a few blocks away. "I felt it was definitely serendipitous that I found A&C Supply. I was in a position where I was moving from photography to printmaking, since I recently realized I was far more interested in processes. I had been getting a bit too clinical in my art", Abby joked, "and when I came across A&C, it was just the right place for me". Abby was hired as a co-manager and immediately started taking in as much information as possible. She was able to fine tune her knowledge of materials and the technical aspect of many mediums, and within a short time became the manager of the Brooklyn store. "Here there is this underlying philosophy of being pluralistic with art", she says, "where customers and staff alike encourage each other to transcend any one medium. We are often discussing ways of translating from one to another. With this approach, artists don't become exclusive with their materials and we find new and interesting ways to use our products". Abby and her staff all agree that mindset lends itself well to the atmosphere of Artist & Craftsman Supply. Customers are greeted from the moment they walk in the door with a friendly face, a wealth of knowledge of the products, and the sense that overcoming hesitations about the creating of art is what they are there to help you with. Abby Perez and the Brooklyn staff can be found at 761 Metropolitan Avenue or reached at 888.772.4542 or bkl@artistcraftsman.com. |
