What's Happening Here Header

Follows is the first of a series of “What’s Happening Here”  - stories of our vendors—those people who make stuff for us artists—told by those vendors.

I’ve asked each to introduce themselves with a brief  bio and then answer the question What’s happening here.
Mark Golden is our first participant.

Mark Golden Bio - 2013

Mark Golden, CEO and Co-founder of Golden Artist Colors, Inc. began in 1980 with 4 employees, his father, the renowned paint maker, Sam Golden, mother Adele and wife Barbara. They began the company in a cow barn on his parents’ retirement home in rural Columbus, New York. The company started by making and delivering unique custom products for artists in Manhattan. GOLDEN continues to produce custom products for artists, conservators and museums in a one-of-a-kind custom production facility today. The company now has a staff of over 150 Employee Owners in its 100,000 square foot facility on the same original property.

Mark has been a guest lecturer at the Conservation Center of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Tate Gallery in London and the National Museum of American History in D.C. as well as dozens of Universities around the world. In 1998, Mr. Golden was a presenter at the Business for Social Responsibility (BSR) conference, speaking on the topic of introducing Social Responsibility in a small business.

Mark was selected as the 1996 Small Business Person of the Year for New York State and recognized by President Bill Clinton for his activities in creating a business that exemplifies the spirit of Corporate Citizenship in providing a work environment that values all employees. Mark received a new award from the American Conservation Institute, recognizing his many contributions to the field of art conservation.  In 2005, Mark received the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) 2005 Inspiration Awards and was honored by the Manufacturers Association of Central New York (MACNY) with a 2005 Wall of Fame Award. In 2011, Golden Artist Colors was recognized by Inc. Magazine as one of the top 50 small businesses to work for. And just this last year, the company was recognized by Americans for the Arts as one of the top 10 contributors to the arts in our country.

What’s new around Golden Artist Colors!

New facility, new products, new Artist Residency! Just this summer we closed on a new building space for us (45,000 sq. ft.), about 20 minutes from the original factory. This will allow us to expand our production resources in our current facility as we launch new products. This brings me to our new products and the current release of our High Flow Acrylics. This product expands the reach of our professional acrylic system to the very, very fluid end! An incredibly versatile acrylic paint, which is all at once an ink, an airbrush color, a staining color, a permanent watercolor, a marbling color, while still remaining totally compatible with our enormous array of acrylic mediums and professional color lines. It is very easily used with a brush or filled into a wide range of empty refillable markers and daubers. The High Flow can even be used in technical pens and with all sorts of calligraphy nibs.

We're also delighted with the positive reception to our acquisition of Williamsburg Handmade Oil Colors after Carl Plansky’s passing. Artists always have a high degree of concern when a new company takes over the production of what for many, has been a cherished line of colors. When Carl produced his paints, it was with his artist’s eye for what he loved about painting in oils. Thankfully, with the same small mills, in the same small batches, with the same staff that worked with Carl, we have not only maintained his tradition, but have expanded it by adding a level of technical support and knowledge that GOLDEN is known for. We’ve added back some colors that were lost over the years like the Green Gold and Indanthrone Blue and an entire range of exquisite French Earth colors. We’ve also brought back Special Edition colors, including a range of Neutral Grays. We have continued here the Williamsburg tradition of making custom oils for artists who are looking for their own dialing in of qualities to their colors. I think those customers who know GOLDEN would expect nothing less from us. Those who are new to our company, we invite you to come learn about our passion for making the best quality materials for professional artists. Better yet, come visit our facility in New Berlin, New York. It’s just two miles away from our new neighbor, Chobani® Yogurt.

If you can’t visit, please contact our Technical Support Services staff for your questions about materials and applications (800 959-6543 or http://www.goldenpaints.com/technicaldata/technicalsupport.php).

Our team fields over 12,000 phone calls and emails from artists around the world annually. We are also regularly posting online the workshops offered by both our Working Artists and our GOLDEN Artist Educators. Hopefully they will be coming to a site close to you in the near future.

Finally, our new Artist Residency, finished just last year, now has a full program year with 18 artists joining us. The season begins in April and concludes in November, with artists spending a month in the space. Applications for this very unique residency are open through the 3rd week in September. The Golden Foundation Residency was developed through the creation of the Sam & Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts, a foundation that our family started after the passing of my father Sam in 1997.  Over the years the Golden Foundation has given over $165,000 in grants to artists and art organizations.  With the completion of the Residency just 300 yards from the Golden Artist Colors’ facility, it has been a dream come true for all of us who have worked with artists over these years to provide a one-of-a-kind facility to provide the technical resource and freedom for artists to explore the widest range of materials ever gathered.
