Graphite Pencils
Graphite pencils are not just lacquered yellow #2s.
Artists's style graphite is graded by hardness or softness. 9B is very soft , 9H is very hard, and HB is right in the middle. Though a graphite is gray in color, the B stands for blackness, since a soft pencil's marks appear dark and almost black. The H stands for hardness. The higher the number that is assigned to a pencil, the more extreme the grade.
A hard graphite will make light marks and easily holds a razor sharp point. A soft graphite makes thick dark marks, but the pencil will not as easily hold a point.
