When asked to make a 'less expensive' version of Gamblin Artist Oils (to be more accessible to a student) Gamblin Artist Colors had an interesting idea. Instead of using inferior pigments, why not instead incorporate a looser mix of the same pigments used in the professional grade line? Artist Sketching Oils were born... from tradition... (that is in fact how student grade paints were concocted by the Old Masters).
Gamblin Artist Sketching Oils are indeed made with the same pigment as the Gamblin Artist Colors - just less of it. The paint is extended with colorless pigments like calcium carbonate - no chemical additives are used. The paint makes an excellent student color or sufficient under painting for the professional grade version. Or used on their own, are a very adequate oil paint.
