Egg tempera is the traditional tempera. What you see on classroom shelves is not. A traditional egg tempera uses egg yolk as the primary component of its binder. Like an egg shell, an egg tempera is brittle and should be applied to a rigid support. The result, however, is suitable for a Renaissance portrait. Sennelier’s egg tempera will hold subtle marks and contains a professional pigment load. Egg tempera is best applied flat (not impasto), and can also serve as the underpainting for a more mundane oil paint. Egg tempera can be thinned with water and is substantially archival.
